SORDID WORDS
What happened to love?
And how did I miss the boat?
It used to be about heart,
But now it just goes for the throat.
Now it's more like politics
Two contending different sides
Fraught with disagreement
And no good place to hide
Love's become a curse
And desire fuels it's fire
Patience has lost its virtue
And the stakes climb higher and higher
I've loved with some intensity
A badge I've had to wear
Love, my greatest failing
IS my cross to bear
I've tried to give it all away
Tried to love and give it freely
Try to raise them up, I'm lowered
My intentions far beneath me
I've read the greatest thinkers
Learned from all their bad decisions
Found the wisdom of the poet
Sorted dogma from religion
Found the peace that comes from silence
Searched science for its wisdom
Peeled back flowers 'til they're open
Watched water for reflection
Climbed the highest mountains
'Til the world came into view
Sought out prophets as I've traveled
Planted trees and ate their fruit
Memorized the lines from times
When thinkers were still valued
Found the voice in signs and wonders
And the ways that they can guide you
Embraced every curiosity
Became aware to serendipity
Loved déjà vu when she comes calling
With the gifts she has to give to me
But to love I'm lost forever
She's a blunt and broken sword
Translate my loss to something pretty
Into these neatly sordid words
