OUR TURN
Bust my ass to make this happen
Bust my ass to make it true
In the darkness of this morning
Lie my thoughts of me and you
Wrapped around me like a blanket
Fleeting moments in a park
Oh such ways I'd like to know you
For endless hours in the dark
But the daylight is important
That's where I would like to be
And this morning, the rising sun
Brought this sudden thought to me
So much poetry of sunsets
That they all seem quite rehearsed
Yet in the moment of this dawning day
I see the sunset in reverse
Starting out with flecks of purple
Burning on to orange and red
Watch the burden of my fading past
Turn to hope instead
Auburn, blonde and copper
Break awake a bludgeoned sky
Send the past, a foreign burden
Into someone else's night
We've both carried this on purpose
This thickly woven tapestry
The blackness of their sordid lives
Their betrayal and their larceny
But as the day gives way
To bright and vibrant light
All that pain is just a memory
Of someone else's life
These strange things we share in common
This doesn't happen all the time
All the ways that we have suffered
Are just some errant pantomime
Of a life we could be living
Of this life that we have earned
The fulfillment of a promise
Truly time to take our turn
