HUMAN BEINGS
Our children come
And then they're gone
We only get them on loan.
A short time
To steer and guide
Before they're fully grown
Then they have to step out
Into this scary world
(And we have to watch them go)
The best we have
Is to know we did our best
Then all we have is hope
Some get two good parents
Some get one and a half
Some get a mom
Who works real hard
And a completely
Useless dad
Some get three or four parents
To guide them along the way
Some get left to relatives
Who love them just the same
I just want to be there
For every kid in my path
I remember all the challenges
That a childhood can have
And then there are
The teenage years
Which are a confusing time
No one takes you seriously
But they expect you to hold the line
Get good grades
Clean the house
Make sure you're home on time
Don't do drugs
Don't get drunk
No sex
Til you're 49!
Torn in multiple directions
Like school
And girls
And friends
Video games
And money
Wondering
"When will my life begin?"
Hoping for a future
Where they have everything
Worked out
No more pimples
No more awkward
Just car, love, job and house
But in this modern-day
It's hard to be a kid
Life just rages on
Without much time to live
The expectation
Set so high
Yet they're surrounded
By instant gratification
Why should they work hard
Or study
When they have
Internet-Porn-Video-Gaming-Televisions?
You have to be creative
To inspire them to see it
To see a reason
They should try their best
And not just give in
To the immediate
If not
We'll have a generation
Of grown-up latchkey kids
Who manage to do nothing
With the life
We sought to give
That's not acceptable
Shouldn't be their future
It's up to us to
See that they succeed
Otherwise our world
Already ended
Taken over
By fast-food
And corporate greed
Our children have real enemies
They are in our modern-day
In our modern views
Our modern minds
And in our modern ways
If we can't teach them
A worthy worldview
Then hope's a useless thing
Were supposed to instill wisdom
(Not consumerism)
And truly make them
